Utilizing Unique Percussion Instruments

At Stack Ring Percussion, we spend our time thinking about various ways to utilize recycled materials to create interesting and unique instruments. This is all based on a trend in the last decade or so where drummers are looking to emulate electronic sounds acoustically. Many drummers and percussionists prefer the tactile to the digital (myself included) and therefore finding ways to avoid using a sampling pad is very appealing. The effects many drummers are after include “white noise” crashes/effects, 808 clap and snare sounds, high-pitched bells, crunchy hi-hats, etc. When I started Stack Ring Percussion in 2018, I began by taking cut up pieces of cymbals and looping them together with a dog tag. I would hang them on crashes, hi-hats, snare drums, and toms to distort the natural sound. This evolved into cutting the bells out of cracked cymbals and creating stacks using steel and bronze pieces. I was capturing sounds I had in my head and even ones I never expected finding. We now have over 20 unique products that can be used in unlimited ways. If you’re looking to find something new to add to your setup that will spur new ideas and tones, look no further.
